You love performing, but you feel like you're stuck. You want to take things to the next level, but aren't sure how to get there. Maybe you’ve tried to push through it with more practice, pep talks, or “fake it till you make it,” but nerves, imposter syndrome, or a lack of clarity keeps you from enjoying your artistry fully. Maybe you’re comfortable on stage, but hesitation shows up when it comes to taking risks — saying yes to a bigger opportunity, sharing your work more boldly, or pushing into new territory. You want to feel confident and connected — but instead, nerves and hesitation hold you back from sharing your best self.

Hey, I’m McKay. I’m an Emmy-winning music director, producer, and performance coach — but before all that, I was just like so many of the singers and performers I now coach. I know what it feels like to step on stage with your heart racing, second-guessing yourself, and wondering if you’ll ever feel truly confident in front of an audience.
Over the past decade, I’ve had the opportunity to work on some of the biggest stages in the world — with Disney, NBC, and artists like OneRepublic, Kristin Chenoweth, Ben Rector, Colbie Caillat, and Jordin Sparks. I’ve also led national and international tours, produced concerts for audiences of 20,000+, and coached thousands of singers and musicians along the way.
But here’s the part that matters most: the strategies I use with professionals at the highest level are the same ones I’ve built into my Fear-to-Freedom Method™ — a proven path from anxious to fearless. Confidence isn’t something you’re born with — it’s something you build. And once you know how to rewire fear, master stagecraft, and train resilience, you can step into performance with clarity, freedom, and joy.

"When I first came to McKay I was very shy and low confidence, but his incredible coaching skills and genuine encouragement helped me break out of my shell and grow as a performer AND person! McKay pulls the best out of you, while also pushing you to become even better, which is why I (and so many others) love working with him."

Working with McKay has been life-changing. He has a unique gift for bringing out the best in a performer. Over the years, he's taught me the importance of stage presence, how to connect with an audience, and how to pour genuine emotion into a performance. His mentorship was a crucial part of my development as a musician, and I carry the lessons he taught me with me every time I step on the stage.

McKay has probably been the single most influential mentor in my musical career to date. He pushed me to move beyond just singing notes, to communicate with emotion, connect with the audience, and carry myself with confidence on stage. McKay has a rare gift: he not only has impeccable creative vision and musical instincts, but he knows how to unlock potential in others.

McKay: "When I worked with Ben Rector, what impressed me most wasn’t just his talent, but how naturally he connected. On and off stage, he showed up as his real self — and because of that, people leaned in. The music landed deeper, because it felt honest. That’s the heart of fearless performing: not perfection, not pretending, but sharing something genuine that makes people feel a part of it."
The qualities that made Ben so impactful are the very lessons we teach performers like you:

McKay: "Working with Gladys Knight was like watching a masterclass in presence. With all her years of experience, she could easily rest on polish and reputation — but what struck me was how present she was in every note, every moment. She didn’t try to control every variable or chase perfection. Instead, she trusted herself and the music, and that gave her performances a power you could feel in the room. That kind of presence isn’t reserved for legends — it’s something every performer can learn to cultivate."
The same qualities Gladys embodied are at the heart of what we teach performers every day:

McKay: "This photo was taken just before an arena show my business partner and I produced and directed for tens of thousands of people. What most people don’t see in a moment like that is the immense pressure, the endless details, and the nerves buzzing behind the scenes. Afterwards, we received feedback from many that it was the best concert ever put on for this client — but that didn’t happen by chance. It happened because preparation creates freedom. When you’ve put in the right kind of reps and trained your mind as much as your voice, the pressure doesn’t crush you — it fuels you. That’s when the stage shifts from a place of fear to a place of joy."
The same lessons that carry me through nights like these are the ones I teach every performer to apply on their own stage — no matter the size.
